Dr. Jean Muma, DSOM, LAc

Dr. Jean graduated with a Master and a Doctorate of Science in Oriental Medicine from the National University of Natural Medicine. There Dr. Jean studied Classical Chinese Medicine (CCM), which is distinguished in its training from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).  CCM focuses on training doctors in classic Chinese medical philosophy, cosmology and symbology. Having learned how to read classical Chinese medical texts to ensure a root understanding of the ‘why & how’ of Chinese medicine, Dr. Jean can decide the ‘where & when’ with more grace and rigor. Connected to the creative origins of science, this non-prescriptive training allows the practitioner to address each person individually, meeting them where they are at any given moment.

In the last year of their Doctorate program, Dr. Jean completed mentorships with two unique individuals. The first one, a highly skilled practitioner, trained them in Japanese meridian therapy, a gentle and very effective technique that uses meridian treatment to elicit systemic change. Two other specialties, the gentle body work technique of qigong-tuina on the one hand, and pediatric treatments on the other - both special areas of interest to this mentor - became part of Dr. Jean’s repertoire through further study. As it is the custom for pediatric treatments to be free of charge, Dr. Jean will be offering a free pediatrics hour once a month. The other mentor is an advanced practitioner and certified teacher in Shen-Hammer pulse diagnosis. This is a highly in-depth and sensitive pulse diagnosis system that allows Dr. Jean to be able to discover some of the root causes of a current manifestation.

Dr. Jean has a good track record of treating people who experience:

  • Musculoskeletal pain (such as low back pain, upper back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, knee pain)

  • Digestive issues (such as acute gastroenteritis, chronic constipation, chronic diarrhea, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, celiac disease/gluten sensitivity, and other allergies)

  • Infertility, painful menstruation, and other gynecological presentations

  • Insomnia

  • Cancer and Cancer Treatments like Chemo and Radiation

  • Chronic UTIs, Prostate enlargement, and urinary difficulties

  • Tinnitus/Ringing in the ears

  • Post-surgical and pre-surgical issues such as edema and pain

  • Migraines and chronic headache

  • Heart Disease

  • Chest pain, Chest tightness, Heart palpitations

  • Asthma and Shortness of breath

  • Bleeding disorders

Prior to starting the doctorate program, Dr. Jean studied agroecology and western herbalism while working as a rehabilitative massage therapist. After a decade of that work and finding themselves running up too often against the limits of bodywork in terms of depth of treatment, Dr. Jean decided to get the training they needed to truly, lastingly help their patients. Multiple trips to China as a long time tea enthusiast helped point them in the right direction. After studying pre-med and peeking into the world of conventional western medicine, they found Chinese medicine sitting dearest and dearest to the heart. Dr. Jean is fully in love with this medicine and feels so blessed to have the opportunity to work with people on their common journey… beautiful spirits enjoying, for a time, a physical experience.
