About Our Practioners
Barclay Calvert has been fascinated with biology and the life-sciences for a long time, and graduated from the University of Washington with a pre-med biology degree as well as a degree in Comparative History of Ideas. Before his planned application to medical school, he did work in infectious disease genetics and then a medical program in Ecuador, but Barclay's passion has always been the human body-mind, Eastern philosophies, and different healing paradigms. Particularly interested in family medicine, general practice, preventive medicine, and how to help people to be more healthy and happy, he turned to Chinese medicine as a better fit for him to practice medicine as he was called to it. Discovering Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) was a revelation to him. TCM focuses on the person, not just the disease, it teaches how to live in harmony with our environment, it has a wholistic understanding of the mind, body and spirit, and how to live longer, be healthier, and avoid illness, as well as gentle, non-invasive time-tested treatment methods. Barclay found TCM to be sophisticated particularly in the areas modern western medicine is lacking, and so Barclay studied at the Seattle Institute of Oriental Medicine (SIOM) instead of medical school, receiving his Master's Degree and license to practice Chinese Medicine in 2004. He chose SIOM for its small size, its apprenticeship based program, the chance to study with experienced masters, and the strong training in herbal medicine. Barclay sees medicine in general, and Chinese Medicine in particular, to be a life-long learning, and he continues his studies in order to better serve his patients. He focuses particularly on gentle, Japanese styles of acupuncture, the importance of physical structural alignment for health, and constitutional prescribing of ancient herbal formulas. The rest of the time he is enjoying his two young children, Lilly and Ethan, and his wife Jen, around their home in Port Townsend.
Jennifer Calvert is a licensed acupuncturist in Washington State and is a nationally credentialed (NCCAOM) Chinese Herbalist. She began her studies of Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine at Bastyr University, graduating in 2000 with her Bachelor Degree. Jennifer then pursued her Masters Degree at the Seattle Institute of Oriental Medicine. Here she studied under the tutelage of prominent doctors of East Asian Medicine in an apprenticeship setting.
The formal education received from the clinical faculty at SIOM allowed Jennifer to study different styles of acupuncture and herbal medicine. Apprenticing alongside doctors with different styles and different specialties provided exposure to the rich diversity found in the acupuncture profession. This diversity has served Jennifer well in her clinic, when treating patients she has an eclectic background of experience from which to draw.
Having many "tools" to use in the toolbox enables Jennifer to cater her treatments to meet each individual's needs. Some people are very sensitive to the energy in their body, and need very little stimulation to change their condition, which is particularly true of children. In these cases, Jennifer relies heavily on her training in Japanese Acupuncture, using very gentle acupuncture techniques to shift the body back into a state of equilibrium. Other people may have energy that lies deep in their body, and stronger stimulation is needed to change their condition, often these people also require the use of Chinese Herbal Medicine in tandem with Acupuncture to effectively improve their health. In addition to classical acupuncture Jennifer has received extensive training in Dermatology and Facial Acupuncture, studying with pioneers of this field.
Piper Dunlap grew up in the West Indies where at an early age he learned to wildcraft "bush medicine" with a local herbalist. He was "pre-med" in college under the influence of his physician uncles and cousins but finally graduated with a bachelor's degree in Comparative Literature from U.C. Berkeley, which he says was probably harder but more fun.
Piper spent the next 15 years as a professional mariner, captaining various passenger and research vessels in the Pacific, Atlantic, Caribbean, and even on a small California Lake. In 2000 he attended Santa Barbara College of Oriental Medicine where he graduated with high honors, was valedictorian, and the founding president of the student council. Since then he has maintained a private practice in Port Townsend, WA. He enjoys doing hospice work at Jefferson Healthcare,, sits on the board of directors at the Northwest Maritime Center, and gets out on the water as often as possible with his two children.
From Cuba to China, Cruise ship clinics to the streets of California, Scott Baker's life has been dedicated to the juxtaposition of social currents and health care. Introduced to Asian Medicine through martial arts in Santa Barbara, Scott returned home to Washington to study at Bastyr University, achieving a Masters degree in Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal medicine.
While at Bastyr, he spent his Spring and Summer weeks between classes traveling through Costa Rica and Guatelmala investigating traditional herbal medicines. In 2008, Scott was part of a small Bastyr-affiliated research team that had the opportunity to travel to Cuba. There they critically assessed the country's innovative implementation of urban organic gardens and large-scale preventative medicine through nation-wide poly-clinics, in which acupuncture was ubiquitous.
More recently, Scott worked for seven months aboard Holland America's cruise ship, the MS Rotterdam. While at sea, Scott treated a wide variety of ailments in a spa-oriented environment; ranging from weight management to facial acupuncture and even terminally ill patients.
After being thoroughly immersed in the world of health care, Scott has returned to Kitsap to resettle and focus on facilitating long-term health through holistic, patient-focused treatments. While away from the clinic, Scott's internal naturalist takes over, summiting Washington's spectacular mountains, biking the many coastal roads, or simply living and loving local farmers, friends and family.
